Helping Foreigners Feel at Home in Korea
Hi and welcome to SmartKoreaGuide!
My name is Richard, and I’m originally from Kenya. I’ve been living in South Korea for over 16 years after first coming here as a student. Over the years, Korea slowly became more than just a place I lived — it became home.
Like many foreigners arriving in Korea for the first time, my journey wasn’t always easy.
When I first moved here, one of the biggest challenges was the language barrier. Simple things like setting up services, understanding paperwork, using Korean apps, or even finding reliable information as a foreigner often felt overwhelming. Back then, there weren’t many clear resources made specifically for foreigners trying to navigate everyday life in Korea.
I know what it feels like to be confused, homesick, frustrated, and sometimes completely lost in a new country.
That’s exactly why I created SmartKoreaGuide.
My goal is simple: to help foreigners in Korea feel more confident, informed, and at home — whether you’re planning your first trip, moving here long-term, raising a family, or simply trying to make daily life easier.
Over the years, I’ve lived in and explored places like Seoul, Suwon, Pyeongtaek, and Cheonan. Through those experiences, I’ve learned a lot about both the exciting and challenging sides of life here.
On SmartKoreaGuide, you’ll find practical and honest content about:

This blog is written from the perspective of someone who has actually lived through the ups and downs of building a life here as a foreigner with a family.
I want this space to feel helpful, welcoming, and real.
If there’s one thing I hope readers take away from SmartKoreaGuide, it’s this:
You’re not alone here. Korea becomes much easier when you have the right guidance and community around you.
Whether you’re visiting for a week or building a future here long-term, I hope this blog helps make your journey smoother and more enjoyable.
Thanks for stopping by, and welcome to the community!
